Amygdala-targeted neurofeedback for dissociative symptoms in PTSD: Converging evidence from three independent studies

Harmelech T, Hendler T,  Gurevitch G, Fine N, Fruchter E, Amital D, Goldental N, Gross R, Robinson MA, Lebois LAM, Kaufman M, Tendler A. Psychiatry Research, Volume 353, November 2025, 116752.

Dissociative symptoms occur in 14-30% of PTSD cases and present significant treatment challenges. Symptoms present as feelings of detachment from oneself (e.g., out of body experiences, feeling as if one doesn’t have a body, disturbances in the sense of personal identity) or detachment from the environment (altered perceptions of space, feeling as if one is in a movie).

This article presents secondary analysis of patients with clinically significant dissociative symptoms (CAPS-5 Q29/Q30 >1) from three independent studies.

The most compelling finding is the consistent pattern of large within-group effect sizes across all neurofeedback conditions (d = 0.85–1.82), with minimal improvements in control groups. Results demonstrate preliminary efficacy of amygdala-targeted Prism self-neuromodulation for dissociative symptoms of PTSD.
